Tynemouth Priory
Ruins Ruined coastal priory with Norman architecture remains
Ruins of Tynemouth Priory crown a headland on the North East coast, adjacent to a castle and beaches; visitors combine coastal walks with medieval masonry and a local market.
Tynemouth Priory is a medieval priory and castle ruin on a headland at Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear, England, with origins in the early medieval period and major surviving structures from the 12th to 14th centuries.
The site features extensive stone ruins of the priory church and associated monastic buildings, substantial stretches of curtain wall and gatehouse, and broad clifftop walks that provide sea views across the mouth of the River Tyne. The setting is compact and walkable, with the main ruins and viewpoints reachable on short paths from the car park and town.
Established as an early Christian religious site in the early medieval period, the priory developed into a Benedictine house with major medieval building phases in the high middle ages. It was dissolved in the 16th century and its buildings were later used and adapted for coastal defence and garrison purposes before falling into ruin and later conservation.
The ruins sit on a rocky promontory at the mouth of the River Tyne, in the town of Tynemouth, about 12 km east of Newcastle upon Tyne. The site is adjacent to the town centre and a short walk from the Tynemouth Metro station.
- Access: A short walk from the Tynemouth Metro station, making it accessible by public transport from Newcastle and surrounding areas.
- Viewing points: Clifftop positions on the headland give uninterrupted sea views; clear days offer long coastal vistas and good sunrise photography opportunities.
