The site is a medieval fortress in Turku, Southwest Finland, founded in the late 13th century and now the largest surviving medieval building in Finland. It functions today as a museum and cultural venue.

The complex contains a fortified keep, several courtyards and museum galleries with period rooms, weapons and archaeological finds, arranged across multiple floors. Visitors typically walk through the medieval sections and later additions, with signage and displays explaining construction phases and everyday life in the castle.

Construction began in the late 1200s as a Swedish administrative and defensive stronghold. The castle was expanded and remodelled over centuries, serving as a military base, administrative centre and prison; it was converted into a museum in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Sited on the banks of the Aura River in central Turku, the castle sits within the city close to the harbour and Turku Cathedral, making it easily reachable on foot from the city centre.

From Helsinki the drive is about 165-175 km along the E18/national road 1 (around 2-2.5 hours by car). Local buses in Turku stop near the castle; it is well signposted from the city centre and riverfront.

• Arrive at opening to explore before tour groups and school visits increase later in the day; the castle interior is compact and becomes congested when buses arrive.
• Make time to climb to the upper rooms and walk the outer walls for the best views over the Aura River-many visitors focus on the ground-floor exhibitions and miss the river panoramas.
