Marmara & Thrace (Istanbul, Bursa, Edirne)
September brings noticeably cooler mornings and far fewer tourists, a comfortable time for walking the historic peninsula and visiting Bursa’s Ottoman sites. Rain chances begin to creep back up by late month, but overall the weather is largely pleasant for outdoor dining and Bosphorus strolls; pack a light jacket for cooler evenings by the water.
Aegean Coast (Izmir, Ephesus, Bodrum, Çeşme, Kuşadası)
September cools to a very pleasant warmth and the sea holds heat from summer, making late-season swimming delightful and crowds tapering off. Harvest activity for olives starts in some inland groves and small-town festivals pick up; it’s an excellent time for sailing around the Dodecanese-facing coast and walking in cooler midday conditions.
Mediterranean / Turkish Riviera (Antalya, Kaş, Alanya, Fethiye, Side)
September cools gracefully and is one of the best months for combining beach time with sight-seeing: the sea is warm, crowds thin, and hiking in the nearby Taurus foothills is comfortable. Late-summer storms are possible but infrequent - it’s an ideal shoulder month for sailing and exploring ancient Lycian routes without the July pressure.
Central Anatolia & Cappadocia (Ankara, Konya, Cappadocia, Nevşehir)
September cools to very agreeable daytime temperatures while evenings begin to crisp - perfect for full-day hikes and vineyard visits near Cappadocia. The crowds thin after August and balloon flights enjoy consistently calm mornings; bring a light jacket for dawn flights and comfortable walking shoes for rocky terrain and uneven trails.
Black Sea Coast (Trabzon, Rize, Amasra, Sinop)
September sees a return to cooler, fresher conditions with increased rainfall later in the month; autumn mists and swollen waterfalls make for dramatic photography. Harvesting activity for hazelnuts intensifies inland, and fewer tourists mean quieter trails - bring layered clothing and waterproof footwear as showers become more common.
Eastern Anatolia (Erzurum, Kars, Doğubeyazıt, Mount Ararat approaches)
September cools noticeably and nights start to bite as the region heads toward winter - the light is clear and crisp, making it one of the most photogenic months for landscapes. Many mountain huts and guesthouses are still open for hikers early in the month; bring warmer clothes for evening and be aware that high passes may begin to see snow late in the month.
Southeastern Anatolia (Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, Mardin)
September cools pleasantly and becomes a favorite month for visiting: daytime heat eases, terraces and villages are comfortable for long walks, and agricultural life picks up after the peak of summer. Hotels and restaurants resume normal daily rhythms and it’s a good time for food-focused travel in Gaziantep; pack layers for cool mornings and warm afternoons.
