Turkey gives most Western visitors 90 days in any 180, and since 2024 has offered a digital nomad visa. Longer stays usually need a residence permit, which has become harder to get. This page covers the position as of October 2026.
Visa-Free Entry and E-Visas#
- Visa-free: citizens of the US, UK, EU countries and many others can stay 90 days in any 180-day period.
- E-visa: some nationalities need an e-visa, bought online on the official government site before travel.
- The 90/180 rule is counted strictly; overstays bring fines and possible entry bans.
Digital Nomad Visa#
- Who: remote workers aged 21 to 55 from eligible countries, including the US, UK, EU countries and Canada, with a university degree.
- Income: at least $3,000 a month or $36,000 a year.
- Work: for employers outside Turkey, or as a freelancer for foreign clients.
- Length: up to one year.
- How to apply: first get a digital nomad identification certificate through the official Go Türkiye digital nomads portal, then apply for the visa at a Turkish consulate. After arrival, apply for a residence permit if staying long.
Short-Term Residence Permit#
The short-term (tourism) residence permit lets you stay beyond 90 days, for up to a year at a time.
- Requirements: proof of funds, Turkish private health insurance, a rental contract or address registration, and a reason for staying.
- Approvals: since 2023, first-time applications for tourism purposes are often refused unless well justified.
- Istanbul addresses: Istanbul’s restrictions on foreigners registering in “closed” neighbourhoods were lifted in June 2026, though approval still isn’t automatic.
