Why Visit Huangshan City? #
A gateway to some of China’s most dramatic mountain scenery, Huangshan City draws travelers who want close access to the Yellow Mountains, the old streets of Tunxi, and nearby UNESCO villages such as Hongcun. Outdoor lovers come for iconic granite peaks, pine-lined ridges and hot springs after long hikes, while food and history fans find comfort in Anhui (Hui) cuisine and preserved merchant architecture. It’s a compact base that mixes nature, culture and provincial charm.
Who's Huangshan City For?
Huangshan City is the primary gateway to the Yellow Mountains: Xihai Grand Canyon, iconic granite peaks and pine-lined ridges are a short ride from Tunxi. Nearby UNESCO villages Hongcun and Xidi and local hot springs make multi-day nature trips straightforward.
If you like hiking, Huangshan delivers steep granite steps, exposed ridgelines and varied routes-cable cars cut hard climbs. Sunrise at Lion Peak or Bright Summit, multi-day ridge treks and guided climbs give serious walkers plenty of challenge.
Couples enjoy sunrise and sunset viewpoints on the Yellow Mountains, boutique guesthouses in Tunxi and riverside teahouses on Tunxi Old Street. Quiet mountain guesthouses and hot-spring hotels near the park provide romantic mornings and easy access to iconic vistas.
Tunxi Old Street and local markets offer Anhui/Huizhou snacks, mountain teas and simple regional dishes. Expect hearty stews, tofu specialties and street bites near the bus station; fine dining is limited but local taverns serve authentic, affordable plates.

How to Get to Huangshan City
Huangshan City (Tunxi) is served by Huangshan Tunxi International Airport (TXN) and by Huangshan North railway station (黄山北站) on the high-speed network. Tunxi (the city centre and old street area) is the usual arrival point for visitors heading to the city or onward to the Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) scenic area.
Huangshan Tunxi International Airport (TXN): The airport is the main air gateway for Huangshan City, located south of Tunxi District. Airport shuttle buses run to Tunxi (Tunxi Old Street / Tunxi Bus Station) - typical fare about ¥30 and journey time 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis and Didi are available outside arrivals; expect a ride to Tunxi in roughly 40-50 minutes for about ¥120-160. Airport transfer vans and private transfers to the Yellow Mountain (Huangshan Scenic Area) are also offered seasonally (prices vary).
Train: Huangshan North (黄山北站) is the city’s high-speed rail hub on the Hefei-Fuzhou corridor. Regular G/D trains connect Huangshan with Shanghai Hongqiao, Nanjing and Hefei - typical journey times are around 3-3.5 hours from Shanghai, 2-2.5 hours from Nanjing and 1.5-2 hours from Hefei; second-class fares commonly fall in the range ¥80-¥200 depending on origin and distance. Taxis or local buses from Huangshan North to Tunxi take about 30-45 minutes; a taxi is roughly ¥60-120.
Bus: Long-distance coaches depart Tunxi Passenger Transport Center (Tunxi Bus Station) and other coach terminals for regional cities such as Hangzhou, Shanghai and Hefei. Coaches can be cheaper than trains for some routes; expect multi-hour journeys to major cities (e.g., 4-5 hours to Shanghai) with fares typically between ¥50 and ¥150 depending on distance and service class. Local intercity shuttle buses also run between Tunxi, the airport and the Huangshan Scenic Area (prices around ¥25-40).
How to Get Around Huangshan City
Getting around Huangshan City itself is easiest by taxi or local bus for most visitors, while Tunxi Old Street is very walkable. For trips to the Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) scenic area use the direct tourist shuttles and cable cars - they save time and energy compared with trying to piece together multiple local buses.
- Local buses (¥1-4) - City buses in Tunxi are the most economical way to get around - routes link Tunxi Old Street, Tunxi Bus Station and many residential areas. Fares are low and commonly paid in cash or via mobile QR if you have Chinese payment; expect journeys of 20-40 minutes across town depending on traffic. Buses can be slower than taxis and signage is often only in Chinese, so have destinations written down or use a map app.
- Taxi & Didi (¥10-80) - Taxis are widely available and convenient for short hops, airport transfers and reaching trailheads. Base fares in Huangshan start around ¥8-¥10 with per-kilometre charges after that; typical inner-city rides cost ¥15-60. Didi works in the region and can be easier if you don't speak Chinese, though some drivers prefer cash for longer or remote trips.
- Train (Huangshan North) (¥20-200) - Huangshan North is the main high-speed rail station serving the area; it handles most intercity G/D services. Use it for fast connections to Shanghai, Hefei, Nanjing and other cities; book tickets in advance during holidays. From the station, take a taxi or the local shuttle bus to Tunxi (about 30-45 minutes).
- Tourist shuttles to Huangshan Scenic Area (¥25-40) - If your goal is Yellow Mountain, take one of the regular shuttle buses from Tunxi or the airport to the Huangshan Scenic Area (Yixian / Tangkou area). Shuttles are timed for tourist arrivals and drop you near the mountain ticket office; journey times vary (roughly 1-1.5 hours from Tunxi). Shuttles are more convenient than piecing together local buses and taxis when carrying luggage.
- Cable cars & mountain transport (¥80-140) - Once at the Huangshan Scenic Area, paid cable cars (several routes) and internal shuttle services cut steep hiking time dramatically and are the practical choice for many visitors. Cable car fares are charged separately from park admission; expect to pay more for one-way or round-trip lifts and plan for queues in peak season. Walking on the mountain itself is required to see the main sights, even if you take a cable car.
- Walking - Tunxi Old Street and the compact downtown are best explored on foot - narrow lanes, teahouses and shops are pedestrian-friendly and within short distances of each other. In the scenic area, expect steep steps and uneven paths; good walking shoes are essential and allow you to access viewpoints that vehicles and cable cars cannot.
