Tuna el-Gebel

Tuna el-Gebel is an extensive necropolis on the west bank of the Nile in Minya Governorate, central Egypt, associated with the ancient city of Hermopolis. The site contains rock-cut tombs, funerary chapels, and large underground galleries that were used to bury and mummify sacred animals.

The animal catacombs used for ibis and other birds, and the decorated tomb-chapel commonly called the Tomb of Petosiris, which dates to the Ptolemaic era. The site preserves a mix of Pharaonic, Ptolemaic, and Roman-period funerary architecture and inscriptions.

Archaeological work has documented the use of the necropolis over many centuries, reflecting Hermopolis’s religious and funerary functions. Finds from the site illustrate animal cults and burial practices linked to the city’s temples.
