Tugu Yogyakarta is a white obelisk-style monument located in the city center of Yogyakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia. It is a longstanding civic symbol of the city.
The monument is a frequent photography and meeting point for residents and tourists and is closely associated with the identity of Yogyakarta. The small urban site is visited as part of walks that include the nearby Kraton (sultan’s palace) and central city streets.
The original monument was erected during the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I in the 18th century and has been rebuilt or restored after later damage. It is commonly referred to locally as an emblem of the city’s historical origins and unity.
Tugu sits in central Yogyakarta at a prominent junction in the historic core of the city, within easy walking distance of the Kraton and Malioboro street.
