Tso Moriri

Tso Moriri is a high-altitude freshwater lake on the Changthang plateau in Ladakh, northern India, noted for its elevation of about 4,522 metres above sea level. It forms a well-defined lake basin set among arid highland ridges and is a focal point for wildlife and pastoral communities.

The lake and its immediate surroundings are important for breeding waterbirds and support a small lakeside settlement at Korzok with a monastery. The shoreline and adjacent wetlands are the main attractions for birdwatchers and visitors seeking high-altitude landscapes.

Tso Moriri is a natural lake on the Changthang, long used by nomadic pastoralists and more recently recognised for its ecological importance; the area is managed to conserve its wetland habitat and birdlife. Visitor infrastructure is limited and seasonal, with the majority of activity occurring in the warmer months.

The lake sits in southeast Ladakh on the high Tibetan plateau, beyond Leh and the main valley roads, with the nearest services at the small settlement of Korzok on its western shore. Access is by high mountain roads that are commonly closed in winter.
