Tsavo West National Park is a large protected area in southeastern Kenya and part of the greater Tsavo ecosystem. The park is known for varied habitats including volcanic hills, lava fields and permanent springs.

Tsavo West forms one section of the historic Tsavo wildlife area and has been managed as a conservation and tourism park within Kenya’s protected area network for decades, with specific conservation programs for species such as rhinoceros and elephants.

The park lies in Taita-Taveta County in southeastern Kenya and is accessed by roads and lodges serving the Tsavo region; it is part of the landscape between Nairobi and the Kenyan coast.

  • Wildlife and seasons: The park contains a mix of habitats from baobab and acacia scrub to volcanic hills and permanent springs; dry-season game concentrations make wildlife viewing more reliable from about June to October.

What to See #

  • Mzima Springs: Clear, cold springs that surface from an underground aquifer and feed viewing pools where hippos and crocodiles can be observed from a purpose-built platform.
  • Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: A fenced rhino sanctuary established within the park to protect and reintroduce black rhinoceros, with visitor drives focused on early-morning and late-afternoon sightings.

Tips for Visiting Tsavo West National Park #

  • Plan game drives for early morning and late afternoon when animals are most active; mid‑day is usually quiet for wildlife and hot on the plains.
  • Make time to visit Mzima Springs in the northwestern part of the park - the clear spring pools and underwater viewing hides for hippos are among Tsavo West's best wildlife experiences.
  • Use a 4x4 and book drives through a reputable lodge or registered guide inside or adjacent to the park - roads are rough and local guides markedly increase your chances of sightings.
  • If possible, stay overnight inside or at a lodge on the park edge to take advantage of dawn and dusk drives instead of relying on long same‑day transfers.

Best Time to Visit Tsavo West National Park #

The best time to visit Tsavo West is the dry season (June-October) when roads and wildlife viewing conditions are at their best.

Dry season (best for wildlife and access)
June-October · 20 to 30 °C
Drier roads and sparser vegetation improve game viewing and park accessibility.
Short rains
November-December · 22 to 30 °C
Intermittent rains can reduce road reliability and visitor numbers but bring greener scenery.
Long rains (least recommended)
March-May · 22 to 30 °C
Heavy rains make some tracks and viewing areas difficult to reach and reduce visibility for wildlife spotting.
