Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya’s largest protected areas, located in the southeastern part of the country. It is famed for expansive open landscapes and abundant wildlife, especially elephants.

Wide savannah plains, sparse acacia woodlands and dry riverbeds create broad sightlines for sightings of large mammals including elephant, buffalo, lion and a variety of antelope. Visitor facilities include seasonal camps and park gates that give access to game drives across long distances.

The Tsavo area has a long conservation history with the park established in the 20th century to protect wildlife in eastern Kenya; it has been shaped by colonial-era management, later Kenyan administration and ongoing anti-poaching and community outreach efforts.

Tsavo East lies in southeastern Kenya and is separated from Tsavo West by infrastructure and the Mombasa-Nairobi corridor, forming part of a vast arid to semi-arid wildlife landscape.

  • Red-dust elephants: Home to large elephant populations that often show characteristic red dust from the local soils, which stains their skin and is a notable visual feature.
  • Game-viewing conditions: Open plains and visibility make this park good for long-distance game viewing and photography, especially during the dry season.
