The Tropaeum Alpium, often called the Trophy of Augustus, is a Roman monument near La Turbie in southeastern France built to commemorate Roman victories over Alpine tribes. It dates to the Augustan period and records the subjugation of Alpine peoples.
The stone trophy was erected in the early Roman Imperial era as a commemorative inscription and sculpted monument; its surviving structure today stands as a prominent remnant of Roman imperial propaganda in the region. The monument originally bore an inscription listing the defeated tribes and served as a territorial marker on the coastal route between Italy and Gaul.
The monument sits just above the village of La Turbie overlooking the Mediterranean coast, a short distance inland from Monaco and the coastal towns of the French Riviera.
