Trollhättan Falls
Waterfall Series of waterfalls and locks, historic hydro site
Waterfalls and a lock system on the Göta älv at Trollhättan, integrated with hydropower and industrial heritage. Tourists watch lock operations, rapids and seasonal flow releases downstream of the power stations.
Trollhättan Falls are a series of rapids and waterfalls on the Göta älv at the city of Trollhättan in western Sweden, closely tied to navigation and hydroelectric development. The site includes an engineered lock system and power stations that replaced the natural falls for navigation and industry.
The falls are viewed from platforms and riverside promenades that overlook the stepped cascade and the lock chambers; informational signs explain the area’s industrial history. The adjacent locks and hydroelectric plants are prominent features and the site is used for both leisure viewing and river traffic.
Historically the rapids presented a major obstacle to river navigation and were altered during the 19th and early 20th centuries with the construction of locks and hydroelectric facilities. Industrialisation in Trollhättan centred on harnessing the river’s power for mills and later for electricity generation.
Located in the city of Trollhättan in Västra Götaland County, the falls lie on the Göta älv and are roughly 75 kilometres north of Gothenburg, within a mixed urban and industrial riverside landscape.
- Significant vertical drop: The river drops roughly 32 metres through the falls and lock system, a vertical change that historically powered mills and later hydroelectric development.
- Summer viewing times: Scheduled water releases and guided explanations are often available in summer, offering the best viewing opportunities for the falls and historic locks.
What to See #
- Trollhättan Locks: A multistage lock system that raises and lowers vessels around the former natural rapids and allows navigation along the Göta älv.
- Olidan power station: Olidan hydroelectric plant, one of the older power stations on the river, visible from the falls and part of the area's industrial heritage.
How to Get to Trollhättan Falls #
Trollhättan town is served by regional trains from Gothenburg (about 1 hour). From the station, the falls and canal are a 10-15 minute walk following pedestrian signs along the river.
Tips for Visiting Trollhättan Falls #
- Walk the downstream promenade to watch the locks and hydro installations; the falls are as much industrial history as natural spectacle.
- Visit at spring melt when the volume is highest - the engineers' pipes and turbines hum beneath the roar.
- Explore the old lock keeper's houses to see plaques and old maps that trace the channel's development.
