Palais de Chaillot at Trocadéro provides one of Paris’s clearest frontal views of the Eiffel Tower; its esplanade, museums (architecture, naval) and terraces attract photographers and museum-goers.
The Palais du Trocadéro was an exhibition and concert complex on the Trocadéro hill in Paris built for the 1878 Exposition. The original building was replaced on the same site by the Palais de Chaillot for the 1937 Exposition.
The first Palais du Trocadéro was erected for the 1878 Universal Exposition and served as an exhibition and performance venue through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Major redevelopment for the 1937 International Exhibition led to demolition of the original façades and construction of the Palais de Chaillot that stands there today.
The complex sits on the Trocadéro hill in Paris’s 16th arrondissement, on the northern bank of the Seine directly opposite the Eiffel Tower and the Champ de Mars.
- Best viewpoint: Esplanade du Trocadéro gives the classic, uninterrupted frontal view of the Eiffel Tower across the Seine and is the most popular vantage point for photographs.
- Museums: The current Palais de Chaillot houses the Musée de l'Homme and the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine, both reached directly from the Trocadéro terraces.

How to Get to Trocadéro Palace #
Public transit: The Trocadéro area (Palais de Chaillot / Place du Trocadéro) is served directly by Paris Métro lines 6 and 9 - get off at Trocadéro station. From the station it is an immediate exit onto the square and gardens; the Jardins du Trocadéro face the Eiffel Tower across the Seine, about a 5-10 minute walk. By car use avenues such as Avenue du Président Wilson or Avenue Kléber, but central parking is limited.
Tips for Visiting Trocadéro Palace #
- Go at sunrise or shortly after for unobstructed, golden-hour views of the Eiffel Tower framed by the Trocadéro esplanade - the crowds are much smaller than at sunset.
- Access the central upper esplanade (Place du Trocadéro) for the iconic frontal view; many visitors forget to cross down to the lower Jardins and fountains, which offer alternative perspectives and reflections.
- Combine your visit with one of the museums inside the Palais de Chaillot (e.g., Musée de l'Homme or Cité de l'Architecture) and check their opening days so you can time a quieter museum visit before or after peak photo hours on the esplanade.
