Northern Trinidad - Port of Spain & the Northern Range

Street-level humidity can spike as Carnival energy builds, so by mid-February the city is hot in the afternoons and sticky at night. If Carnival falls this month, the streets around Queen’s Park Savannah fill with costumes and early-morning steelpan sessions - ideal if you want the spectacle but not the full parade day crush. Northern Range trails stay comfortable in the mornings; carry sunblock and a hat for exposed climbs.

Central Trinidad & Caroni Lowlands (Chaguanas, Arima, Caroni Swamp)

Festival noise rises in February as the lead-up to Carnival fills the towns with rehearsals, and daytime temperatures climb so that stalls and street food are popular for cooling off. The Caroni River side becomes sultrier, with the marshlands radiating humidity; evening boat tours to see the roosting scarlet ibis are comfortable if you bring a light poncho in case of a shower. Expect busier roads on weekends as locals travel to rehearsals and rehearsals go late into the night.

Southern & Western Trinidad - San Fernando, La Brea & Gulf of Paria

Carnival fever in February sends people toward the cities and coastlines for parties and fetes; daytime temperatures in San Fernando climb, and the Gulf remains placid for sunset cruises. Beachside bars get busy, so book early if you want a table; coastal breezes make evenings livable despite the heat. If you plan to drive south after dark, be ready for traffic surges returning from Carnival events.

East Coast & Windward Coast - Toco, Manzanilla, Grande Riviere

Pre-Carnival February sees locals preparing beachside fetes; the east coast is warm and slightly more humid, with onshore winds kicking up modest Atlantic swells. Grande Riviere begins to come alive as turtle-nesting volunteers increase patrols; if leatherback season coincides with your trip, guided night watches can be arranged. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing and a flashlight for evening turtle excursions.

Tobago - Southwest & Leeward Beaches (Scarborough, Crown Point, Pigeon Point, Buccoo)

Late morning sun in February warms the sand quickly and Carnival-related visitors spill over from Trinidad for island fetes; Crown Point airport stays busy with regional flights. Snorkeling visibility tends to be excellent in the sheltered lagoon at Buccoo, and local restaurants bustle in the evenings. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and reserve reef tours in advance if you plan to visit during festival weekends.

Tobago - Northeast & Main Ridge (Speyside, Charlotteville, Main Ridge Forest Reserve)

February retains tight trade-wind flow that keeps the ridge cool and vibrant; birders prize early mornings for tanagers and elusive motmots. The Atlantic side near Speyside is often choppier, so diving schedules depend on conditions; when seas are calm the visibility is excellent for wall dives. Pack layered clothing for changing microclimates and check with dive operators about daily sea states.
