Treasure Island Museum

The Treasure Island Museum is a local museum on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay that documents the island’s history, notably the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition and the island’s later use as a U.S. naval station. It preserves photographs, artifacts and interpretive material related to those periods.

Exhibit material covers the construction of the artificial island for the 1939 exposition, the fair itself, and subsequent naval activities; the museum operates on a small scale and focuses on local history rather than broad museum collections.

The island was built for the Golden Gate International Exposition and was later developed as Naval Station Treasure Island. The museum’s collection and displays reflect those two principal eras of the island’s history.

The museum is on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, connected to Yerba Buena Island. The site lies between the cities of San Francisco and Oakland and is reached by the island causeway from Yerba Buena Island.
