Trans-Karakoram Tract
Valley Disputed high-altitude tract bordering China and Pakistan
The Trans‑Karakoram Tract is a high‑altitude, sparsely populated territory administered by China and part of the Karakoram mountain system; its passes and glaciers draw mountaineers and border‑region researchers.
The Trans-Karakoram Tract is a high-altitude tract north of the main Karakoram range currently administered by the People’s Republic of China. The area is internationally notable because of competing territorial claims.
The tract is remote, consisting of glaciers, high passes, and steep mountain valleys with no significant permanent civilian settlements; travel is limited and usually undertaken only by scientific or military parties. There are extensive glaciated landscapes and high mountain routes rather than tourist infrastructure.
In 1963 Pakistan and China reached an agreement that demarcated the boundary in this region; India has continued to assert a claim to the area as part of the larger Kashmir dispute. The tract has therefore remained under Chinese administration but with ongoing diplomatic sensitivity.
Located north of the main Karakoram crest, the Trans-Karakoram Tract sits at the border area between Xinjiang (China) and territories claimed by India and Pakistan, in a very high and rugged portion of the western Himalaya-Karakoram complex.
- Legal and political status: Subject of a 1963 boundary agreement in which Pakistan and China delineated the border in this area; India maintains a competing claim.
- Terrain and access: Remote, largely uninhabited highland tract north of the main Karakoram ranges, accessed mainly for border administration and high-mountain travel.
