Trans-Ili Alatau

The Trans-Ili Alatau is a mountain range forming part of the Northern Tien Shan south of the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan. It is a major alpine barrier that rises directly from the Almaty metropolitan area.

The range offers alpine terrain close to the city with valleys, cirques, and glacier-fed rivers used for hiking, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing. Mountain trails and passes provide routes into higher, glaciated areas and viewpoints over the city and surrounding plains.

These mountains have long formed a geographic frontier for settlements on the steppe and have been used traditionally for seasonal grazing and more recently for organized alpine recreation and scientific study. Infrastructure such as cableways and access roads has been developed from Almaty to reach higher sectors.

Stretching along the southern edge of Almaty, the Trans-Ili Alatau sits in southeastern Kazakhstan and is the first major highland range encountered south of the city, separating Almaty from inner Tien Shan valleys.
