• Go just before sunset to catch the square's long shadows and the light on the Abai statue - fewer buses, better photos.
• Combine the visit with a walk up nearby Panfilov Street and a stop at the nearby Zenkov Cathedral for a contrast of Soviet-era plaza and Tsarist wooden church.
