Toubkal
Mountain Highest peak in Morocco and North Africa
Jebel Toubkal, at about 4,167 metres, is the highest peak in the Atlas and in North Africa; climbers undertake multi-day ascents from Imlil, staying in mountain refuges on the route to the summit.
Toubkal (Jbel Toubkal) is the highest mountain in Morocco and in the Atlas Mountains, reaching 4,167 metres above sea level. It is located in the High Atlas range within the Marrakesh-Safi region and is a primary mountaineering destination in North Africa.
The summit is commonly reached via established trails from the mountain villages such as Imlil, with typical ascents taking one to two days depending on itinerary and fitness. Routes are serviced by mountain huts and local guides, and the climb involves steep paths and rocky terrain.
The peak has long been a focus for both local shepherding activity and recreational mountaineering; mountain infrastructure developed around the standard routes supports guided trips and overnight stays at refuges.
Toubkal lies roughly south of the city of Marrakech in the High Atlas, with the nearest practical access points in mountain villages reached by road from Marrakech and other regional centres.
- Elevation: At 4,167 metres it is the highest peak in Morocco and the entire Atlas mountain system.
What to See #
- Imlil and base villages: Imlil and nearby mountain villages that serve as the main trailhead and base for ascents to the summit, providing lodges and guiding services.
- Refuges and routes: High-Atlas trails and mountain huts used by climbers and trekkers on the standard routes to the summit.
How to Get to Toubkal #
Mount Toubkal is normally accessed from Marrakech via the High Atlas valley village of Imlil. From Marrakech drive southeast on the N9 toward Asni and then follow local mountain roads to Imlil - the drive is about 60-75 km and typically 1-1.5 hours. Imlil is the common trailhead: vehicles stop in the village and the ascent to the Toubkal refuge begins on foot (or by mule); organized hikes, guides and mule services operate from Marrakech and Imlil.
Tips for Visiting Toubkal #
- Best time: aim for spring or autumn for stable weather and reduced snow on the standard route; if attempting a winter ascent, only go with proper alpine gear and experienced guides.
- Which entrance/gateway: Imlil is the classic gateway village for the normal route up Toubkal - most treks start there and local muleteers and guides operate from the village.
- What most people miss: spending a night at the Toubkal refuge or a guesthouse in a high village gives a much better summit experience than trying a single very long day hike from lower down.
- Avoiding crowds: start the final ascent well before dawn so you're ahead of the day‑tripper groups; booking a local guide and staying in Imlil also spreads arrivals across multiple huts and routes.
Best Time to Visit Toubkal #
Jebel Toubkal is best climbed in spring or autumn when conditions are most stable and snow on higher routes is reduced.
