Torre Velasca
Palace 20th-century mixed-use tower and Brutalist landmark in Milan
A 1950s Milan skyscraper by BBPR, Torre Velasca combines concrete structural ‘mushroom’ upper floors with a medieval city setting; architecture fans photograph its cantilevered top near the Duomo quarter.
Torre Velasca is a landmark high-rise in central Milan, Lombardy, designed by the BBPR architectural studio and completed in the late 1950s. It is notable for its post-war Italian modernist design that references medieval Lombard massing.
Designed by the BBPR collective after World War II, the tower was completed in 1958 and represented a key statement of Milanese modern architecture that engaged with the surrounding historic centre. Its form deliberately contrasts modern materials with references to traditional tower architecture.
The building stands in central Milan within the city’s historic core, a short walk from major landmarks and transport hubs. Its location places it within the dense urban streetscape rather than a standalone plaza.
- Viewing point: Best appreciated from street level in the historic centre, where its distinctive overhanging upper structure and concrete profile stand out against Milan's older skyline
- Access: The building is mixed-use with offices and residences, so interior access is generally restricted
