How to Get to Tongchuanshi
Tongchuan (Tongchuanshi) is easiest reached via Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) or by rail from Xi'an. High-speed trains to Tongchuan North and regular intercity coaches provide the most reliable connections from Xi'an; expect about 30-90 minutes travel time by rail or coach from Xi'an depending on service.
Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY): Xi’an Xianyang is the nearest major airport serving Tongchuan. From XIY you can take an airport bus or metro/airport express into Xi’an city (about CNY 25-35, 30-60 minutes) and then transfer to a high-speed train from Xi’an North to Tongchuan North (see train details below). A direct taxi or ride-hail from XIY to central Tongchuan takes roughly 1.5-2 hours and typically costs around CNY 300-450 depending on traffic.
Yan’an Nanniwan / other regional airports: There are no major commercial airports in Tongchuan itself; the nearest alternative regional airports (for some routes) are considerably farther and uncommon for regular service to Tongchuan. If arriving at a regional airport you will generally transfer via Xi’an by bus, taxi or rail (times and prices vary widely by airport).
Train: Tongchuan is served by rail. High-speed services call at Tongchuan North (铜川北站) on the Xi’an-Yan’an corridor; trains from Xi’an North to Tongchuan North typically take around 30-60 minutes with second-class fares commonly in the CNY 25-60 range depending on service. Conventional trains also serve Tongchuan railway station (铜川站) on slower routes; these take longer (often 1.5-3 hours from Xi’an) with lower fares (roughly CNY 10-30).
Bus: Regular long-distance coaches run between Xi’an and Tongchuan from Xi’an coach stations (e.g., major intercity coach hubs). Journey times are usually around 1.5-2.5 hours depending on route and traffic; typical fares are in the CNY 40-80 range. Within Tongchuan and nearby towns there is a local city-bus network with low single fares (see transport section).
How to Get Around Tongchuanshi
Tongchuan is easiest to navigate by rail and taxi for point-to-point travel, with the high-speed service to Tongchuan North the most efficient connector to Xi'an. For short trips within the city, use local buses or bikes; taxis/Didi are recommended for convenience or when public transport is sparse.
- High-speed rail (HSR) (CNY 25-60) - The HSR connection to Tongchuan North is the fastest way to reach the city from Xi'an and other regional hubs. Trains are frequent on the Xi'an-Yan'an corridor; travel times from Xi'an North are typically 30-60 minutes. Book tickets in advance for peak times and use station announcement boards - Tongchuan North (铜川北) is the main high-speed stop.
- Conventional train (CNY 10-30) - Conventional (non-HSR) services call at Tongchuan railway station and are slower but cheaper than high-speed services. These trains are a good option if you're on a tight budget or travelling overnight. Expect travel times from Xi'an of around 1.5-3 hours depending on the service and fares in the CNY 10-30 range.
- Intercity coach / long-distance bus (CNY 40-80) - Coaches run between Xi'an and Tongchuan from major coach stations in Xi'an; they're frequent and useful if HSR schedules don't match your plans. Taxis are metered; for long fixed-distance transfers (for example from XIY) negotiate a fare in advance or use a trusted app.

They're inexpensive and convenient for flat, short routes - watch for local traffic rules and helmet recommendations. Availability varies by neighborhood and season.
