Tomb of the Triclinium
Monument Etruscan painted tomb in Tarquinia, ancient necropolis
In the Etruscan necropolis at Tarquinia, the Tomb of the Triclinium displays well-preserved 6th-century BCE frescoes of banquets and dancers; archaeology enthusiasts visit for funerary art and guided tours of vaulted chamber tombs.
The Tomb of the Triclinium is an Etruscan rock-cut tomb in the Monterozzi necropolis near Tarquinia in Lazio, Italy, famed for its painted frescoes dating to the early 5th century BCE. The tomb’s wall paintings depict banquet scenes, dancers, and ritual imagery and are among the best-known examples of Etruscan funerary art.
The interior is a single decorated chamber carved from tufa rock with banquet couches and painted figures rendered in vibrant pigment. The tomb is interpreted as reflecting Etruscan beliefs about death and the afterlife and the social status of the interred.
Archaeological excavations and conservation since the 19th century have exposed and preserved the chamber, but the paintings remain sensitive to light and humidity. The tomb sits within the broader Monterozzi necropolis, a large cemetery of rock-cut tombs that is accessible to visitors through the archaeological park.
The site lies close to the modern town of Tarquinia on the Tyrrhenian coast, about an hour and a half by road northwest of Rome depending on traffic.
- Conservation and photography: Frescoes inside the tomb are fragile and conservation measures often restrict flash photography and unsupervised access to protect pigments.
