The Tomb of the Leopards (Tomba dei Leopardi) is an Etruscan painted burial chamber in the Necropolis of Monterozzi near Tarquinia in Lazio. Its polychrome frescoes date to the mid 5th century BC and make it one of the most important Etruscan painted tombs.
A single, rock-cut chamber decorated with vivid frescoes that portray a banquet scene, musicians and attendants, with leopards depicted above the composition. The wall paintings display figural scenes and motifs typical of elite Etruscan burials and are noted for their color and composition.
Constructed and decorated by the Etruscans in the 5th century BC as a family burial chamber, the tomb and its paintings have been studied and conserved since their rediscovery in the modern era. The imagery reflects funerary beliefs and the social status of the interred.
Located within the Monterozzi necropolis near the town of Tarquinia in the province of Viterbo, the tomb forms part of the Etruscan necropoleis that lie on the ancient Tyrrhenian coast.
