Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng

The Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng is an ancient burial complex near Suizhou in Hubei province, China, dating to the late Spring and Autumn period (mid 5th century BC). It is best known for a near-complete set of ritual bronze chime bells and well-preserved burial goods.

The principal highlights are the tomb’s recovered musical bronzes - a set of tuned bronze bells - and the original burial assemblage that included bronze vessels, lacquered wooden objects and the coffin furnishings. Museum displays typically present the bell ensemble and selected ritual vessels; the site itself is known from archaeological excavation rather than public-era displays on the mound.

Built for Marquis Yi of the state of Zeng in the 5th century BC, the tomb was part of the funerary practice of regional noble households. Archaeologists excavated the sealed tomb in 1978, recovering large numbers of bronzes and well-preserved organic materials that have informed knowledge of music, ritual and craftsmanship in that period.

The tomb complex was discovered near Suizhou (Sui County) in northern Hubei province. Excavated finds are conserved and displayed in regional institutions and national museums in China.
