Tokyo Tower
Church Communications tower resembling Eiffel Tower with city views
An orange-and-white communications tower in Minato with two observation decks, Tokyo Tower offers urban panoramas by day and illuminated city views by night.
Tokyo Tower is a 333-metre-tall communications and observation tower in Tokyo, completed in 1958 and modelled visually on the Eiffel Tower. It serves as a broadcast antenna and tourist landmark with multiple observation levels.
The tower has public observation decks at about 150 metres (Main Deck) and 250 metres (Top Deck) that provide city-wide views, and the structure is often lit at night in seasonal colour schemes. There are shops and small attractions in the tower’s base and lower levels.
Built in the postwar period to support television broadcasting and symbolise Japan’s recovery and modernisation, the tower has remained a familiar Tokyo landmark while newer broadcast towers have since been constructed.
Tokyo Tower stands in the Minato ward, near Shiba Park and within central Tokyo, with good access from multiple subway and train stations and views over the city skyline.
- Height and date: Constructed in 1958 and standing 333 metres tall, the tower was inspired by the Eiffel Tower and functions as a communications and observation tower in central Tokyo.
What to See #
- Main Deck (150 m): The Main Deck at approximately 150 metres, offering a broad panoramic view over Tokyo and the surrounding wards.
- Top Deck (250 m): The Top Deck at around 250 metres, an indoor observation level reached by elevator with views extending farther across the Tokyo metropolitan area.
How to Get to Tokyo Tower #
Take the Toei Oedo Line to Akabanebashi Station (about a 5-minute walk to Tokyo Tower), or Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line to Kamiyacho Station (roughly 7-10 minutes on foot). The tower is also walkable from Hamamatsucho Station (JR Yamanote/Keihin-Tohoku) in about 15-20 minutes. Taxis and local buses serve the Shiba Park/Tokyo Tower area.
Tips for Visiting Tokyo Tower #
- Visit around sunset so you can see Tokyo in daylight and then watch the city light up; note there are two observation levels (Main Deck and a higher Top Deck) and the Top Deck requires a separate, limited-capacity ticket.
- Buy Top Deck tickets in advance or early in the day through the official site/box office when available-capacity is restricted and the higher deck can sell out on busy days.
- Combine your visit with a short walk to Zojoji Temple at the tower's base for a classic photo composition and to avoid the immediate crowds focused only on the observation decks.
Best Time to Visit Tokyo Tower #
Visit in spring for pleasant weather and views or in winter for the clearest long-distance visibility, and avoid major holiday windows if you want fewer crowds.
