Tokyo Mosque
Mosque Large Ottoman-style mosque serving Tokyo's Muslim community
Tokyo Mosque functions as one of the city’s main Islamic centers, offering Friday prayers, community events and a mosque interior for visitors interested in Islamic architecture and multicultural Tokyo.
Tokyo Camii (commonly called the Tokyo Mosque) is the largest mosque in Japan and is located in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo. It is an active place of worship and a cultural centre for the local Muslim and Turkish communities.
The building is executed in an Ottoman-influenced style and contains an ornate main prayer hall, decorative tilework and a library and cultural spaces used for exhibitions and events. The mosque is both a religious centre and a destination for visitors interested in Islamic architecture.
The present complex was reconstructed and restored with Turkish community involvement in the late 1990s and opened in its current form around 2000, replacing an earlier mosque on the site. It operates as a functioning mosque with regular prayer times and community activities.
Tokyo Camii sits in Shibuya ward, within easy reach of central Tokyo; it is accessible by local rail and bus services and is visited both by worshippers and by tourists outside of prayer hours.
- Visitor etiquette: Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times; modest dress and removal of shoes on entry to the prayer hall are required.
