Todra
Stream Town near Todra Gorge, dramatic canyon access
Todra Gorge in Drâa-Tafilalet features towering limestone walls and a narrow river canyon; rock climbers, hikers and photographers come for routes, riverside palm groves and visits to nearby Berber villages.
Todra Gorge is a river canyon in the eastern High Atlas of Morocco, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region near the town of Tinghir. It is notable for its steep limestone walls that rise to roughly 300 meters and a narrow canyon floor in places as little as about 10 meters across.
The accessible lower gorge offers paved paths, small hotels and shops, and short walks along the riverbed through the narrowest sections, making it popular for day-visits and photography. Climbers and longer trekkers use the higher canyon where the river runs through a broader, more rugged gorge with the same high limestone faces.
The canyon was carved by the Todra River over geological time, producing the deep vertical walls and narrow passages seen today. Local Berber settlements have long used the oasis-like valley at the canyon mouth for agriculture and trade routes through the High Atlas.
Geographically the gorge sits in the eastern High Atlas near the town of Tinghir in Drâa-Tafilalet. It is one of several prominent river gorges cutting the High Atlas and is accessed by road from Tinghir and nearby towns.
- Best time to visit: Best visited in spring or autumn when temperatures are milder and water levels are lower, avoiding the intense summer heat that can make the canyon uncomfortable.
- Climbing opportunities: The vertical limestone walls reach roughly 300 meters in places, which is a major draw for sport and trad rock climbers from around Morocco and abroad.
- Lower vs upper gorge: The clearly developed lower gorge area near Todra village is where most visitor facilities, guided walks, and parking are concentrated, while upstream sections are more remote.
What to See #
- Lower Gorge (Todra village section): Located at the most accessible stretch of the canyon, this section has paved walkways, small hotels and shops, and the narrowest walls-about 10 meters apart in places-making it the principal area for casual visitors and short hikes.
- Upper Gorge / high canyon: Higher up the canyon the river runs through a wider, less-developed gorge with steeper limestone faces rising to roughly 300 meters; this section is quieter and used more by climbers and longer trekkers.
