Archaeological Site Ancient Lycian city ruins with rock-cut tombs
An ancient Lycian city above the Xanthos valley, Tlos offers rock-cut tombs, an acropolis and Hellenistic-Roman baths; hikers follow paths to panoramic ridgeline views and sparse shepherd tracks.
Tlos is an ancient Lycian city in Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey, occupying a steep hilltop and surrounding slopes with archaeological remains from the Lycian, Hellenistic and Roman periods. It is notable for rock-cut tombs, an acropolis and visible Roman public works.
Major visible features include a hilltop acropolis with Lycian tombs carved into the rock, and lower terraces that preserve a theatre, baths and sections of an agora from the later Hellenistic and Roman phases. The site illustrates long continuity from Iron Age Lycian occupation through Roman urbanisation.
Tlos was a significant settlement in ancient Lycia and saw successive building phases; Lycian funerary practices produced the distinctive tombs and later Roman influence added civic architecture, reflecting changing political and cultural control in antiquity.
The ruins are situated in rugged terrain near the modern district of Fethiye in Muğla Province, southwestern Turkey, set above a valley and accessed from nearby local roads and villages.
- Mixed Lycian and Roman remains: The site contains Lycian funerary architecture including rock-cut tombs and sarcophagi alongside Roman-period public buildings.
