Tiya (archaeological site)

Tiya is a megalithic archaeological site in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, notable for a concentration of carved standing stones and tombs. It is one of the best-known Highland Ethiopian megalithic cemeteries and has been recognised for its distinctive decorated stelae.

The principal feature is a group of carved stelae - upright stone monuments bearing incised symbols, including depictions that resemble swords and geometric motifs - arranged across a cemetery area. The stones vary in height and carving detail and are set among low earthen mounds.

Scholars date the monuments broadly to the medieval period or earlier and interpret the site as a funerary landscape reflecting local social and ritual practices; archaeological study has focused on the stelae and associated grave deposits. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its cultural significance.

Tiya lies in the southern Ethiopian highlands in Oromia, on a plain north of the town of Soddo and roughly 60 km south of Addis Ababa, surrounded by agricultural land and low hills.
