The Tiwi Islands are an island group in the Northern Territory of Australia consisting principally of Bathurst and Melville islands. The islands are permanently inhabited by the Tiwi people and are noted for living Indigenous culture and arts.

Visitors go to experience Tiwi art centres, guided cultural tours and wildlife in coastal and mangrove environments; community-run galleries sell locally produced carvings, fabrics and prints. Access is limited compared with mainland tourism, so organized visits and permissions are recommended.

The islands have been continuously inhabited by the Tiwi people for many generations and maintain distinct language and cultural practices. European contact and mission activity occurred from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the islands later developed community infrastructure for residents.

Geographically the Tiwi Islands lie off the north coast of the Northern Territory, north of Darwin, and are reached from Darwin by light aircraft, charter flights or infrequent boat services.

  • Access from Darwin: Access from Darwin is by scheduled light aircraft and private charter flights or by occasional boat services; plan transfers from Darwin for day visits or overnight stays.
  • Culture and arts: Home to the Tiwi people, the islands are known for distinctive arts and crafts including carving, textile work and ritual painting - local art centres coordinate sales and cultural visits.

  • Bathurst Island: The larger of the two main islands, containing the principal community of Wurrumiyanga (formerly Nguiu) and local cultural centres.
