Port Essington is a historic site on the Cobourg Peninsula in Australia’s Northern Territory that marks the location of a short-lived 19th-century British settlement. The place is known for its archaeological remains and coastal landscape.

Established as a British outpost in the 19th century to assert a presence on the northern Australian coast, the settlement was later abandoned and fell into ruin. The surviving structures and burial sites document that brief colonial episode.
