Island Tropical Malaysian island famed for diving and beaches
Tioman Island off Pahang’s east coast offers coral reefs, dive sites and jungle interiors; visitors come for scuba diving, snorkeling, beach bungalows and inland trails.
Tioman Island is a volcanic island in the South China Sea off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Pahang. It is widely known for its coral reefs, beaches and a mix of coastal villages offering visitor facilities.
Beaches, reef diving and snorkeling are the main draws, with a network of dive operators and day boats serving popular sites around the island. A few coastal villages such as Tekek, Salang and Juara act as bases for accommodation, dining and water-sport operators.
Traditionally inhabited by Malay fishing communities, the island developed a tourism economy during the 20th century while retaining small villages and stretches of rainforest interior. Marine conservation measures apply to important reef areas.
The island lies off the Pahang coastline and is accessed by scheduled and charter ferries from mainland jetties at Mersing and Tanjung Gemok, plus limited air charters to the island airstrip.
- How to get there: Regular ferries and seasonal fast-boat services connect the island with mainland jetties at Mersing and Tanjung Gemok; small aircraft charters also operate to the island's airstrip.
- Diving and snorkeling: Known for coral reefs and clear water, with dive sites and snorkeling accessible directly from shore or via short boat trips.
What to See #
- Tekek (main village): The island's main settlement and ferry point, serving as the principal hub for shops, accommodations and transport connections to the mainland.
- Salang: A small coastal village known for dive shops and access to nearby coral reefs and snorkeling sites.
- Juara: A quieter village on the island's east coast popular with low-density tourism, turtle nesting and more remote beaches.
- Coral reefs and marine zones: Fringing coral reefs and marine zones around the island used for scuba diving, snorkeling and marine conservation efforts.
