Pulau Tioman
Island Popular Malaysian island resort with coral reefs
An island off Malaysia’s east coast known for coral reefs, snorkeling, scuba and jungle trails; small villages and beach bungalows support boat charters and dive operators.
Pulau Tioman (Tioman Island) is an island in the South China Sea off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, administratively part of the state of Pahang. It is known for its beaches, coral reefs and tourist villages along sheltered western bays and more exposed eastern coasts.
Prominent visitor areas include small settlements and beaches such as Tekek, Salang and Juara, which serve as hubs for diving, snorkeling and beach accommodation. The island’s fringing reefs and clear water make it a long-established dive destination, and the interior is covered by steep, forested hills.
Historically a group of Malay fishing villages, the island grew into a tourism destination from the late 20th century while retaining many small-scale village communities and locally run guesthouses. Access is primarily by ferry from the mainland and by limited air services when available.
Tioman lies off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and is reached from mainland ferry ports and small aircraft operations; the island’s main villages are clustered around sheltered bays on the west side while the east coast is more exposed to open sea.
- Getting there: Access is by ferry from the east-coast mainland (ports such as Mersing or Tanjung Gemok) and by small, seasonal air services to the island's airstrip when available.
- Marine recreation: The island is widely visited for snorkeling and scuba diving around its fringing reefs, with multiple dive shops and protected reef sites near the western bays.
What to See #
- Tekek: Tekek is the island's main settlement and administrative centre, containing the primary ferry pier, shops, and accommodation clusters.
- Salang: Salang is a bayside village on the island's west coast known for dive shops, snorkel access and short-stay tourist facilities.
- Juara: Juara is a more remote east-coast village popular for its beach, surfable waves at certain tide conditions and a quieter atmosphere than the western bays.
How to Get to Pulau Tioman #
Pulau Tioman is reached by ferry from the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia - the main ferry terminals are Mersing (Johor) and Tanjung Gemok. Daily ferries and speedboats run from Mersing jetty to various villages on Tioman (ferry time typically about 1.5-3 hours depending on vessel and landing point); check schedules seasonally as services vary.
By road, Mersing is the usual mainland gateway: drive from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing along the East Coast/Palmerah corridors (roughly a 3-4 hour drive depending on traffic). From Mersing jetty you disembark on the island and most resorts are a short walk or a short taxi/boat transfer from the island jetties.
Tips for Visiting Pulau Tioman #
- Visit during the dry season (roughly March-October) when ferry services from Mersing run more reliably and snorkeling/diving conditions are best.
- Arrive via the main ferry terminal at Tekek (the island's largest village) - most inter-island services land there, and it's the easiest place to find onward transport and accommodations.
- Avoid the midday dive-boat crowds by booking early-morning snorkeling trips or staying in smaller villages such as Salang or Juara and launching from there.
- Don't skip the Marine Park centre and short inland walks: many visitors focus on beaches and miss the island's waterfall paths and lowland trails that are nicest in the cooler morning hours.
Best Time to Visit Pulau Tioman #
Best visited in the calmer months (March-October) when seas are steadier and diving/snorkeling are most reliable.
