Tinmal Mosque

The Tinmal Mosque is a 12th-century Almohad mosque located near the village of Tinmal in Morocco’s High Atlas within Marrakesh-Safi. It was built as a religious centre for the Almohad movement and is an important example of Almohad architecture outside Marrakesh.

The mosque is notable for its austere Almohad design, stone construction and preserved interior spaces including a prayer hall and mihrab. The structure is compact but significant for its age and architectural type, attracting visitors interested in medieval Maghrebi architecture.

Commissioned in the mid 12th century by leaders of the Almohad movement, the mosque served as a spiritual and communal centre for followers of Ibn Tumart and the emerging Almohad state. It has undergone repairs and conservation interventions in the 20th and 21st centuries to stabilise its fabric.

The mosque sits in a mountain valley of the High Atlas in Marrakesh-Safi, at high altitude relative to Marrakesh and surrounded by rugged peaks and rural Berber villages. It is reachable by road from Marrakesh and nearby mountain towns.
