Timpanogos Cave National Monument protects a system of limestone caves on the slopes of the Wasatch Range above American Fork Canyon in Utah. The site is designated for its speleothems - stalactites, stalagmites and other calcite formations - and for public education about cave geology.

Guided tours take visitors through the show-cave sections where well-developed cave formations, draperies and flowstone are visible in illuminated passages. Interpretive signage and rangers explain cave formation processes and the specific geology of the limestone system.

Because of its elevation and canyon location, visitor access is seasonal and tours are limited in number; visitors should check opening dates and reserve tickets before travel. Trails and the monument’s visitor facilities provide the starting point for cave tours.

The cave system was explored and later protected in the early 20th century, and the area was designated a national monument to preserve its geological features and allow managed public access. Management has focused on guided interpretation and protection of fragile formations.

The monument is located in American Fork Canyon in northern Utah, on the north slope of the Wasatch Range near the towns of American Fork and Orem, within reasonable driving distance of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.

• Tour access: Access to the caves is by ranger-guided tour only and tours are seasonal; tickets should be reserved in advance during the busy months.
• Visitor condition: Tours include stairs and narrow passages; the site is at higher elevation so temperatures inside the caves remain cool year-round.

What to See#

• Cave system: The show cave system comprises three connected caverns - commonly referred to as Timpanogos Cave, Middle Cave and Hansen Cave - linked by tunnels and walkways used during tours.
• Visitor approach and trails: Trails and a visitor area above the caves provide access and interpretive signage; the approach includes a mountain road and a short uphill path to the cave entrance.

Timpanogos Cave National Monument is accessed via American Fork Canyon on Utah State Route 92. Drive up SR‑92 from the Utah Valley (from towns such as American Fork, Orem or Provo) to the monument’s visitor area; parking and access are managed at the visitor center, and cave visits are by guided tour only (shuttle/parking arrangements are seasonal). Check the National Park Service site for current tour and parking requirements before traveling.

• Reserve cave tour tickets early in the day of your visit - ranger‑led tours are the only way into Timpanogos Cave and tickets often sell out in summer peak season.
• Plan time for the uphill trail from the visitor center to the cave entrance (the path is steep and lasts about a mile); factor the hike into your tour timing because you cannot drive to the cave mouth.
• Check seasonal operating dates and tour start times before you go-the cave is open only part of the year and tour schedules change with weather and seasons.
