Timotesubani Monastery

Timotesubani Monastery is a medieval Georgian Orthodox monastic complex in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, founded in the high medieval period and noted for its surviving wall paintings. The complex is recognised for its architectural plan and particularly for interior fresco decoration.

The site includes a main domed church and associated monastic buildings clustered on a hill, with fresco cycles that date to the 12th and 13th centuries. The paintings are important examples of the region’s religious art from Georgia’s late medieval period.

The monastery was constructed and expanded in the high middle ages during a period of strong ecclesiastical and political development in Georgia; the frescoes and many structural elements reflect that medieval phase. Over time the complex has undergone conservation work to stabilise stone and wall-paintings.

Timotesubani sits on a wooded hill in Samtskhe-Javakheti, southern Georgia, within reach of local towns in the Adigeni district and surrounded by rural, hilly landscape.
