Tikal Temple I, often called the Temple of the Great Jaguar, is a major pyramidal temple in the Tikal archaeological park in Guatemala’s Petén region. The structure rises to about 47 metres and is one of the best known monuments in the Tikal complex.
Visitors encounter a steep stairway leading to the summit shrine and have views across the central plaza and surrounding forest canopy. The temple sits directly on the north side of Tikal’s Great Plaza and is part of the dense cluster of ceremonial architecture there.
Constructed in the 8th century AD, Temple I was built as a funerary monument for the Classic Maya ruler Jasaw Chan K’awiil I. It forms a focal point of Classic period Tikal and contributes to the site’s status as one of the major Maya ceremonial centres.
The temple is located within Tikal National Park in the Petén Department of northern Guatemala, in a protected archaeological reserve that is reached from the regional centre of Flores and other local towns.
