Tikal
Archaeological Site Ancient Maya city with towering temple pyramids
In Guatemala’s Petén Lowlands, Tikal reveals towering Maya pyramids, broad plazas and jungle-canopied causeways. Tourists climb selected temples for sunrise views, watch howler monkeys and learn about Classic-period inscriptions at an extensive archaeological park.
Tikal is a large ancient Maya city and archaeological park in the Petén region of northern Guatemala, noted for its monumental pyramids and civic-ceremonial core. It was one of the major political and population centers of the Classic Maya civilization.
The site contains massive stepped temples and palaces clustered around plazas and ballcourts; Temple I (the Great Jaguar) rises to about 47 metres and faces the main Great Plaza, while Temple IV is the tallest structure at roughly 70 metres and offers extensive views above the rainforest canopy. Archaeologists have documented more than 3,000 structures across the urban complex, including causeways and reservoirs.
Tikal’s major growth and monumental construction occurred during the Classic period, roughly 200-900 CE, when it served as a regional capital with dynastic rulers, public ceremonies and carved stelae. After the Classic period the city’s population declined and many structures fell into ruin before re-discovery and archaeological study in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The site is located in the Maya Biosphere Reserve in northern Guatemala’s Petén Department, inland from the Caribbean coast and surrounded by lowland tropical forest; the nearest sizable town is Flores, which serves as a common base for visitors.
- Number of structures: Archaeologists have documented more than 3,000 structures across the site and its surrounding urban complex, reflecting a large Classic Maya city-state.
- Visiting tips: Early mornings and late afternoons offer cooler temperatures and better light for photography; the site is surrounded by lowland tropical forest, so humidity and insects can be significant during the day.
