Tiger Leaping Gorge
Valley Deep Yangtze canyon known for dramatic scenery
Tiger Leaping Gorge on the Jinsha River offers steep granite walls and a fast river current; hikers tackle cliffside trails between Naxi villages, taking day treks or multi‑day routes to experience dramatic river scenery.
Tiger Leaping Gorge is a deep river canyon on the Jinsha River (upper Yangtze) in Yunnan province, southwestern China. The gorge is roughly 15 kilometres long and is noted for its steep rock walls and dramatic river channel.
Hiking and viewpoints are the main attractions - the route offers a sequence of viewpoints, narrow cliff paths and carved stairways with views down to the river. The landscape is dominated by precipitous cliffs and the contrasts between the river channel and the snow-capped peaks above.
Small villages and guesthouses at the trailheads provide accommodation and local guides, and short day-hikes between viewpoints are common for visitors not doing multi-day treks. Several well-marked viewpoints look down into the main gorge and along the river corridor.
Tiger Leaping Gorge is a natural landform created by fluvial erosion rather than a built site; the canyon has been shaped over millennia as the Jinsha River cut through the uplifted terrain between high mountain ranges. Local legends and cultural associations exist, but the site’s significance is primarily geological and recreational.
The gorge lies in northwestern Yunnan province between high peaks of the Hengduan range. It is located in a mountainous area upstream from Lijiang and is accessed from small towns and trailhead villages along the river valley.
- Trail safety: Weather on the high trails can change rapidly and sections are exposed - proper footwear and daylight hours are recommended.
What to See #
- Trail sections: The classic hiking routes are divided into the Upper Trail, Middle Trail and Lower Trail - the Upper Trail is the most popular for panoramic views while the Lower Trail runs close to the river and has steeper sections.
- Trailhead villages: Qiaotou and Hetaoyuan are the main villages that function as trailheads and base for guesthouses and local services.
- Flanking mountains: The gorge cuts between two snow-capped massifs - the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain - forming the narrow river canyon that visitors explore.
How to Get to Tiger Leaping Gorge #
Tiger Leaping Gorge is reached by road from the regional centres of Lijiang (to the south) and Shangri‑La (to the north). Public buses and tourist minibuses run from Lijiang and Shangri‑La to the trailhead areas (notably Qiaotou/Tina’s Guesthouse), with the drive from Lijiang typically taking around 2-3 hours. Final access along the gorge is on foot - hikers start at the designated trailheads and cover distances on the gorge trails (walking distance depends on the route chosen).
Tips for Visiting Tiger Leaping Gorge #
- Start at Qiaotou (the bridge at the gorge entrance) early in the day - that lets you hike the well-used trails before tour buses arrive and gives better light on the rapids for photos.
- If you're doing a multi-day trek, plan at least one night in the Middle Gorge (Tina's/Middle View area) rather than rushing through; that section gives the most dramatic canyon views and calmer mornings.
- Use the established upper-trail route and check local trail conditions at guesthouses before setting out; many visitors miss the viewpoint stretches above the river that offer uninterrupted canyon panoramas.
Best Time to Visit Tiger Leaping Gorge #
Best in spring or autumn (April-June, September-November) for stable weather and good trekking conditions; avoid the monsoon if possible.
