Tiger Island (Isla del Tigre) is an island in the Gulf of Fonseca off Honduras’ Pacific coast in Valle Department. It contains the town of Amapala, which is the island’s principal settlement and port.
The island is primarily a small, working community oriented around fishing and local services; visitors will find coastal villages, beaches and small-scale agriculture rather than developed tourist infrastructure. Boat transport and local boats provide the usual access between the island and mainland ports.
Isla del Tigre has been settled for centuries and served as a local maritime and trading point in the Gulf of Fonseca; it has been part of Honduran administrative divisions since the colonial and post-colonial periods.
The island sits in the Gulf of Fonseca on Honduras’ Pacific flank, off the southern Honduran mainland and within Valle Department. Amapala is the main harbour and settlement on the island.
