How to Get to Tiefencastel#

Tiefencastel is best reached by rail-the scenic Rhaetian Railway (RhB) serves the town directly on the Albula line. International visitors normally fly to Zurich and complete the trip by train via Chur and the RhB.

By Air

Zurich Airport (ZRH): Zurich is the main international gateway for Tiefencastel. From Zurich Airport take an intercity train (SBB/IC/IR) to Chur (about 1h15-1h30) and then change to the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) toward Tiefencastel; total journey ~2-2.5 hours. A one-way ticket Zurich Airport-Tiefencastel is typically CHF 40-70 depending on connections and seat reservations.

Bern/Zurich regional airports: Bern-Belp (BRN) and St. Gallen-Altenrhein (ACH) have fewer international services; connections via Bern or Zurich by train add time and require transfers to RhB services to reach Tiefencastel (total travel times vary widely).

By Train & Bus

Train: Tiefencastel is served directly by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) on the Albula line; the station is Tiefencastel. From Chur take the RhB regional or RegioExpress services (about 35-50 minutes) and from St. Moritz or Davos you can also reach Tiefencastel via the Albula line. Expect CHF 10-30 for the RhB leg.

Bus: Local PostAuto buses serve villages around Tiefencastel and connect to the station; fares are modest (usually a few CHF) and timetables align with train arrivals for regional transfers.

How to Get Around Tiefencastel#

Public rail is both the practical and enjoyable option: arrive by SBB to Chur, then transfer to the RhB Albula line to Tiefencastel. For flexibility, hire a car, but the village itself is easiest to reach and move around by train and local bus.

  • Rhaetian Railway (RhB) (CHF 10-30) - The RhB is the most convenient and scenic way to reach Tiefencastel; trains are punctual and designed for mountain travel. Regional and RegioExpress services stop at Tiefencastel station and connect to Chur, St. Moritz and other Val Bregaglia destinations. Bring layers - alpine weather can change quickly.
  • SBB/InterCity (CHF 20-70 (ZRH-Chur segment)) - Longer-distance travel from Zurich, Bern or Geneva uses SBB InterCity/IR services into Chur, where you transfer to RhB. Bookings and Swiss Travel Pass options can reduce costs for tourists. Trains are fast and comfortable with luggage space.
  • PostAuto bus (CHF 2-10) - Local PostAuto buses connect smaller villages to Tiefencastel station. They are inexpensive and timed to meet train services, but frequency drops on weekends and evenings. Handy for last-mile travel into hamlets and walking trailheads.
  • Taxi (CHF 30-80 (short transfers)) - Taxis cover routes not well served by public transport (early/late journeys or heavy luggage). They are convenient but can be costly in remote alpine areas - confirm the fare beforehand.
  • Car hire (CHF 60-120/day) - Renting a car gives maximum freedom for exploring the Graubünden region, nearby passes and valleys. Roads are well maintained; winter tyres or chains may be required in snow. Check mountain road conditions in winter.
  • Walking - Tiefencastel and its immediate surroundings are compact and pleasant to explore on foot. Trails to nearby alpine features start close to the village and are well marked during the hiking season.
