Tibesti Mountains
Mountains Saharan volcanic massif containing Emi Koussi, desert refuge
The Tibesti Mountains in the central Sahara feature volcanic peaks, remote oases and sand-swept plateaus; expedition travelers come for desert trekking, rock art and high-elevation views.
The Tibesti Mountains are a remote volcanic mountain range in the central Sahara, straddling parts of northern Chad and southern Libya. They contain some of the highest peaks in the Sahara and a complex of volcanic cones and plateaus.
The Tibesti have long been inhabited by Toubou peoples and occasionally visited by European explorers and geologists from the 19th century onward. The volcanic origin of the range has shaped human settlement patterns, with villages and oases clustered in sheltered valleys.
The range sits in the central Sahara, extending across international borders with its core massifs mainly in northern Chad and parts reaching into southern Libya. The landscape is extremely remote, many hundreds of kilometres from major cities.
- Elevation: Peaks in the Tibesti rise above 3,000 metres, making them the highest in the central Sahara and a distinct climatic and ecological zone compared with surrounding desert.
What to See #
- Volcanic massifs: Emi Koussi and other high volcanic massifs, featuring volcanic cones, calderas and high plateaus that rise well above the surrounding Sahara.
Tips for Visiting Tibesti Mountains #
- Treat the Tibesti as a remote, expedition-grade destination: there is virtually no tourist infrastructure and security conditions in Libya make travel there inadvisable for most visitors.
- Before planning anything, consult your government's travel advisories and only consider travel if arranged through specialists with up-to-date local contacts and formal permissions; independent travel is not realistic.
