Why Visit Thủ Đức district? #

Part urban tech hub and part riverside neighborhood, Thủ Đức district draws visitors with its mix of university energy and leafy riverfronts. Bình Quới village and the Vietnam National University campus bring green spaces and cafés; weekend night markets hum with street food like bánh mì and phở. Who's Thủ Đức district For?

Digital Nomads

Thu Duc has become a tech and education hub with growing cafés, coworking spots and more affordable long-stay rentals than central District 1. Internet is generally reliable and improving transit projects are making intra-city commutes easier for remote workers.

Foodies

Street food markets, student canteens and riverside cafés give Thu Duc a broad everyday food scene-try local bun mam, seafood stalls and bánh mì near the university areas. Malls like Vincom have mid-range dining options for variety and convenience.

Business

Home to Saigon Hi-Tech Park and several industrial zones, Thu Duc attracts startups, manufacturers and education institutions. Modern office space and proximity to central Ho Chi Minh City make it a practical base for regional business activity.

Families

Parks, shopping malls and family attractions such as Suoi Tien Theme Park are within easy reach; schooling options and suburban housing suit longer stays. Compared with inner city, Thu Duc feels more residential and relaxed for kids and parents.

Couples

Quieter riverside stretches, new cafes and boutique hotels offer relaxed date options away from central nightlife. Evening walks along local canals and casual seafood dinners create low-key, affordable romantic outings without District 1 crowds.

Party Animals

Nightlife here isn’t as intense as downtown Saigon, but student bars, late-night eateries and occasional live music venues exist around university zones. Good for casual nights out rather than club-hopping or large festival scenes.

How to Get to Thủ Đức district

Thủ Đức district (part of Ho Chi Minh City) is easiest to reach via Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) or by intercity buses at Mien Dong New Bus Station; Saigon Railway Station serves long-distance rail arrivals. From those hubs, the quickest and most convenient onward travel is usually by Grab/taxi or local bus depending on budget and luggage.

By Air

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN): Tan Son Nhat is the main international and domestic gateway for Ho Chi Minh City and is the closest airport to Thủ Đức. By taxi or Grab expect roughly 150,000-300,000 VND and about 30-50 minutes to central parts of Thủ Đức depending on traffic. There are airport shuttle and public bus services that run toward the city’s eastern bus terminals (serving the Mien Dong area); fares are much cheaper (roughly 30,000-50,000 VND) but travel time can be 45-70 minutes depending on stops and traffic.

By Train & Bus

Train: Saigon Railway Station (Ga Sài Gòn) is the city’s main long-distance rail hub for north-south services. Long-distance train tickets vary by route and class; local onward travel to Thủ Đức is usually by taxi or Grab (about 80,000-180,000 VND and 20-40 minutes). Trains are best if you’re coming from other major Vietnamese cities and arriving with luggage.

Bus: Interprovincial coaches mostly use the Mien Dong New Bus Station (Bến xe Miền Đông mới), which sits on the eastern edge of Ho Chi Minh City near Thủ Đức. Ticket prices vary by route (short regional trips can be ~100,000 VND; longer routes several hundred thousand VND); from the terminal you can take a short taxi/Grab ride to destinations inside Thủ Đức (typically 20,000-80,000 VND and 10-30 minutes). City bus services also link Thủ Đức with central districts at low fares for local travel.

How to Get Around Thủ Đức district

Navigating Thủ Đức is easiest by motorbike taxi or Grab for short-to-medium trips, while taxis are better for luggage and comfort. City buses are the cheapest option and the metro (Line 1) will significantly improve east-west travel once fully operational.

Nightlife in Thủ Đức district #

Thủ Đức district has gotten livelier as Ho Chi Minh City expands east: expect student-friendly cafes, casual bars, karaoke (karaoke is huge) and some craft-beer and coffee spots. It’s not a party district the way District 1 is, but evenings are social - outdoor dining, riverside terraces and university-area hangouts. Practical tips: many venues are informal (no strict dress code), most places close around midnight to 2am, and motorbike taxis are the fastest way around.
