Three Rivers Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, Pennsylvania, that hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) and Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB). The stadium opened in 1970 and was demolished in 2001 as teams moved to new, sport-specific venues.
Designed as a multi-use bowl, it seated tens of thousands for football and baseball and was notable for its location at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s rivers, which inspired the name. The facility hosted regular season games, playoff fixtures and civic events during its operating years.
The stadium stood on the North Shore of downtown Pittsburgh between the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, adjacent to where the two join to form the Ohio River, and was replaced by separate ballpark and football stadium developments on nearby sites.
