Three Mountains of Dewa
Mountains Sacred mountain trio and pilgrimage site in Yamagata
Three sacred peaks in Yamagata Prefecture-Dewa Sanzan-known for mountain pilgrimage, Shinto and Shugendō practices; visitors follow shrine routes, mountain trails and seasonal rituals.
The Three Mountains of Dewa, known in Japanese as Dewa Sanzan, are a cluster of three sacred peaks in Yamagata Prefecture that form a long-standing center of mountain worship and pilgrimage. The complex is an active religious landscape associated with Shugendo and Shinto practice and remains a destination for pilgrims and tourists.
Hikers and pilgrims most often visit Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan and Mount Yudono as a grouped pilgrimage. Mount Haguro features a cedar-lined approach and a stone stairway of approximately 2,446 steps culminating at a shrine complex and a notable five-story pagoda; it is accessible year-round. Mount Gassan is the highest and is visited for its alpine terrain and seasonal flora, but its access road is commonly closed in winter. Mount Yudono is treated as the most sacred site of the three and maintains strict rules for conduct and photography inside the shrine precinct.
Dewa Sanzan developed over many centuries as a site for mountain asceticism and syncretic religious practice combining Shinto and esoteric Buddhist elements. Shrines, stone stairways and pilgrimage infrastructure accumulated over the medieval and early-modern periods and the mountains remain a living ritual landscape.
The peaks sit in Yamagata Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side of northern Honshu, with the town of Tsuruoka and other local centres serving as access points for visitors. Mountain roads and marked pilgrimage trails connect the three summits across a range of elevations and terrain.
- Haguro steps: The Haguro path of stone steps is accessible year-round and is the most commonly used pilgrimage route for those visiting all three peaks.
- Yudono rules: The Yudono shrine enforces strict rules for visitors; photography inside the shrine precinct is prohibited and some areas may be off-limits to non-initiates.
