Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is an ancient burial mound near the town of Kazanlak in central Bulgaria, dating to the Hellenistic period of the 4th century BCE. It is noted for its well-preserved interior frescoes depicting funerary rites.

The key attraction is the painted interior showing a funeral banquet and procession scenes in a Hellenistic style, executed in multiple colors and preserved on the walls of the chamber. The painted friezes and figures are compact but detailed and are the primary reason for the site’s significance.

The tomb itself is a small, domed burial chamber entered via a short passage; because of conservation concerns visitors do not normally enter the chamber but view it under controlled conditions. A visitor centre and local museum provide reproductions and further explanation of Thracian funerary customs.

Constructed in the 4th century BCE for a Thracian noble or royal burial, the tomb displays funerary architecture and painted decoration influenced by Hellenistic practice. It was rediscovered in modern times and has been conserved to preserve the fragile pigments and masonry.

The tomb lies immediately north of the town of Kazanlak in Stara Zagora Province, set in a low mound within an agricultural landscape. It is close to the modern town and served historically as a local elite burial monument in the Thracian valley.
