Sredna Gora is a mountain range in central Bulgaria that runs roughly west-east and lies south of the main ridge of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina). It is a lower-elevation range composed of several ridges and valleys that form a transition between the higher Balkan crest and the Thracian Plain to the south.

The area comprises forested slopes, agricultural foothills and scattered towns, and its elevations are generally lower than those of the adjacent Balkan range. The range has been used historically for forestry, pasture and local agriculture and contains roads and passes connecting central Bulgaria with southern lowlands.

Geographically Sredna Gora lies within central Bulgaria and spans multiple provinces including Plovdiv Province; it forms part of Bulgaria’s interior mountain system and is visible from nearby lowland cities and transport routes.

Sredna Gora is a mountain range served from nearby regional centers rather than a single town. The usual approach is by car from Plovdiv (the nearest major city): driving to access points in the range (for example the towns of Koprivshtitsa, Panagyurishte or Strelcha) typically covers roughly 30-70 km depending on which ridge or trailhead you target; local roads connect the range with Plovdiv and Pazardzhik.

There are also regular regional buses from Plovdiv and Pazardzhik to the towns on the Sredna Gora foothills (e.g., Koprivshtitsa, Panagyurishte); from those towns you can walk or start hikes on waymarked trails into the mountains (walking distances vary by trailhead).

• Visit in late spring or early autumn and aim for early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures, clearer views and better light for photos - summer midday can be hot and hazy.
• Approach from the larger regional hubs (Plovdiv or Sofia) and use signed mountain roads and official trailheads rather than attempting cross-country routes; waymarked trails connect the main ridges and villages.
• Set aside time to detour into small cultural sites on the slopes - several Bulgarian National Revival towns and local museums near the range are often skipped by hikers focused only on summits.
