The Rose Valley in central Bulgaria is the agricultural and cultural region around Kazanlak and Karlovo in Stara Zagora Province famed for cultivation of Damask roses used to produce rose oil. The area is a central hub of Bulgaria’s rose-oil industry and associated traditions.

Fields of Rosa damascena and local distilleries are the valley’s primary attractions; many small-scale distilleries open to visitors during the harvest and there are museum displays about rose-oil production. The annual Rose Festival in Kazanlak celebrates the harvest with cultural events, parades and demonstrations of traditional rose-picking.

Rose cultivation in the region expanded in the 19th century and the local oil industry became commercially important for exports and perfumery. The valley’s economy and cultural calendar remain closely tied to the seasonal harvest and artisanal distillation.

Geographically the Rose Valley lies in the foothills of the central Balkan Mountains, in the Kazanlak-Karlovo corridor of Stara Zagora Province, with the city of Kazanlak at its core and agricultural plots extending along the valley floor and lower slopes.

Rose Valley refers to the rose-growing area around Kazanlak in Stara Zagora Province. The easiest public-transit route is to take an intercity train to Kazanlak (services run from Plovdiv and Sofia), then take a short taxi or local bus from Kazanlak town center to the surrounding rose fields and distilleries-most sites are a brief drive (typically 5-15 minutes) from the station.

If you are driving, follow the main roads into Kazanlak (from the direction of Plovdiv take the road via Karlovo) and park in Kazanlak before heading out to individual rose farms by car; many farms are reached on short local roads from the town.

• Visit in late May-early June to coincide with the rose harvest and local Rose Festival when distillation is happening and the scent is strongest.
• Base yourself in Kazanlak for easiest access to rose museums, distilleries and festival events; use Karlovo as a quieter alternative if you want fewer crowds.
