Thomas Circle

Thomas Circle is a small traffic circle and landscaped park in northwest Washington, D.C., centered on an equestrian statue of Major General George H. Thomas. It functions as both a traffic junction and a pocket park for the surrounding neighborhood.

The circle’s central island offers walking paths, benches and tree cover, while the surrounding streets form a busy urban junction that connects Massachusetts Avenue, Rhode Island Avenue and 14th Street NW. The statue at the center is the most visible feature and serves as a local landmark for the 14th Street commercial corridor.

The bronze equestrian monument was created by sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward and was dedicated in 1879; the park area around it has been adapted over time to accommodate pedestrians and traffic changes. The circle sits amid a dense urban fabric of mixed-use buildings, restaurants and residences.

Thomas Circle is located in the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., roughly midway between Logan Circle to the north and the downtown area to the south. It is part of the extended 14th Street neighborhood and is walkable from nearby commercial corridors.
