Thimlich Ohinga

Thimlich Ohinga is an archaeological complex of interlinked dry-stone enclosures in western Kenya notable for its preserved stone walls and compound layout. The site represents traditional construction techniques used in the region and is an important local cultural monument.

Visitors encounter networks of low to medium-height stone walls forming homestead and livestock enclosures arranged on a slight ridge. The stonework is dry-laid and creates a distinctive pattern of compounds and passageways that reflect historic settlement and social organisation in the area.

Archaeological study and conservation work have highlighted the site’s role as a settlement complex used for domestic and livestock-related functions by local communities. The walls and compound layouts have been conserved to allow public access and interpretation.

The complex is located in Homa Bay County in western Kenya, inland from the Lake Victoria basin, and is approached via local roads from nearby towns in the region.
